Can I book a non direct flight that has a connect stop to my peferred desination?
I want to book a flight from philly to detroit, the cost is $200 dollars but there are flights that go from philly to charlotte that stop in detroit for $130. Could i book the flight instead and just not take the flights to charlotte? would they let me get on in detroit during my return flight even though i wasn't on the flight that went from charlotte to detroit?

If its a round trip ticket, you will have problems. They will cancel the rest your ticket when you dont show up for your connecting flight.This only works on 1 way trips when you are not checking bags also.

Yes, that would work OK outbound (with no checked bag.) No, that wouldn't work on the return.

Your return trip will be canceled if you do this.
